274 Chap. 3 3, f131 Ïa.poJïtian upon the Bosk of o B. Verf. 14, when men are dull and flowof heart tounderfland w 'at he fpeak- eth, which as naturall men alwayes, fo godly men ftenare, as is followeth in this text ; He fpeak.th once, yea twice, Tet man perceiveth it not. That is, apprehendethnot fometimes that God is fpeaking to him, and he feldome underflandeth what God is fpeaking to him. There is a littlevarietie in the expofition of this latter claufe of the verfe ; The word man not being expreffely in the Hebrew ( and therefore we finde it put by our tranflarers in adrflin charaéler) the text runs only thus ; Godfpeaketh once, yea twice, he perceiveth it not. This bath occafion'd the vulgar latine inter- preter toreferre this lift claufeof the verfe toGod alfo ; giving out the fence thus ; god fpeaketh once, anda fecund . time. ha dodo Sërnel toquinir not repeate it ; As if here were a warning givetn, thatall.íhould dens et fecondò attend the very firfl motion of Gods voyce to them;Forhe fpeak- id ipfunz non eth once, and doth not repeate- thefame. Sculte duty arifing from their frailty ) fo to doe. Men ought to confider often and review their owne words as well as their works. But ( faith Elihu, according to this reading ) Godfpeaksonce, anddoth not confider ofit againe ; for he bath the meafure and compaffe of all things fo fully inhimfelfe , that he needs not turne.backe his thoughts uponany of his determinations, as if there could be a Iniflake, or any error in them. This isa veryglorious truth,high,- ly advancing the name of God above every name among the befi of the children of men. And it arifeth clearely, from the text, leaving out the fuppliment which we make of the word fnato. Yet according to the opinion ofthe-moil and:befl expofiterr,,.yea according to the cleareft fcope and tendency:of the text, that word
