The benefit which God aymes at in afflivuingman returnes to man. He would have man bettered=by.afi&isn, and as Toone as man is bettered by affiic}ion, every thing (hall goe bet- ter with him, and he (hall be delivered from affliction. ( Rom: S. 2t .) Ail things worke together for thegoodof them that love God, to then; who are thecalled according tohis purpafe. And as all things worke together for the good ofthem, who are the called accord- ing to his purpofe , fo it is the purpole of God that all things íhouldworke together for their good , and that isnot a fucceis- letspurpofe. Indeed every rod-upon the backs of the-wicked hath a vovice in ir, to call them from the pit,of death-and deftruCiion, and éo be enl.i;htnedwith the light of the living;but God makes this call effe&uall to all his ele&,none ofwhom thaI' perish with the world. Thirdly, Note. (Manwouldundue himfelfe both forhere and for ever, ifGod didnot worke wonderfully for him, and powerfully keep him from deflruïiion. All thefe things God worketh twice and thrice, to keep our foules from the pit ; man left tohimfelfe would run head-long upon.mifchiefe in this world,& upon eternal( mifery in the world to come. Nothingbut the hand of God can hold man from ruin- ing.himfelfe.
