Soo Chap. 33. An E.xpofition upon the Book of J v B. Verf.3, proportion, between the eare and the mouth,, in difcriminating their proper obieò's. Hearing and`tarting, are two of thofe five excellent ufefuli fenfes which God bath planted in the nature of man, the other three are teeing, finelling, feeling. Here we have a companion between two of the five fenfes; look what the mouth is to meat , the fame is the ear to words. ,In the mouth,:; the f nfe oftafling is placed as a Judge todifcerne between good and bad, favory and unfavory meates;and the eare of a man which receiveth words is accompanied withan underflanding, whereby we apprehend what is true, what is fare, whatis to be approved, and what refuted. And the conparifon runs yet more ciearelyy, while we confider, that as the food which the mouth receiveth is prepared for the helpe ofour natural or bodily life, fo the words ofinftruélion which the eare receiveth are prepared for the food of our foules, and the maintaining of our fpirttuall life. Some conceive the sorpar, iron is not here made between the two fenfes of tailing and hearing, but that both are compared to thofe wife and knowing men fpoken of,and CO whom appeale is made in the former verfe. For as all the fenfes are not fitted to judge of words and meates, but only theeare and palate ; fo all men are not fit nor capable to judge of weightymatters and pro- found queflions, but only wife and knowingmen. And fo accord- in,' to this interpretation, both or either of thefe fenfitivefactil- ties, and both or either of their properties, are alike compared towife and learned men, whoare able not only tounderfiand the found of words, but alfo exercife a judgement upon them, .both todifcerne anddetermine what there is of truth and right in sopientia eft them. Hence that faying of the Ancient , Wifdome is a favory fopidefeiontia, (knowledge. Wife men talk and favour the things which theyknow. He furely wasa wife man who fayd of thewordof God (fer: is. s6.) Thy words werefound, and,Idid Bate them, and thy word was tome the joyand rejoyciogofmy heart. Heare, Oyewifemen, and give ear to meye that have knowledge ;.the ear tryethwords,m the mouth tailed, meat ; that is, as the ear ofa man tryethwords, and as the mouth of ,a mandoth tafrmeat ; fowife and knowing men try andtafl that which isfpoken andheard. Thusboth thefe fen- fitive faculties, their propertiesand powers are compared towife men, whodoenot only heare the voyce ofhim that fpeaketh, but fit., down to confider it.
