Chap34. An E'vpoy/itiont'ttpon thi 'Bookof o B. Verf. 3, Thirdly, Noce. < A fpiritu illl judicious and confaderate man will take time to judgeofthings that arefpoken, as the pallatedoth ofmates that are eaten. The care tryethwords as the mouth talleth meat ; God hàt_h given man a faculty for that end, and he is to ufe his faculty. We commonly fay, Lsokbefore you leape. Surely then`_we fhould tall before we care, and prove all things whether they are goodor 'no, beforewe ( elec ively) hold that which is good. ( a Thef. s. a r .) The noble Berean_r received the ,cord with all readineffe ofmind ; yet they would make.no more haft then goad fpend to receive it, for (as the Text faith, 4t s ry. a a.) They fearched the Scrip- tures dayly whether chafe things were fo. Fourthly, Hereare two Organsof fenfe fpoken of, the ear and -themonth, both are of great ufe to-man,but oneof them, the care is ofamore frequent andnobleufe. Bealls have both mouths and cares ; but becaufe theirs is onlya fenfitive life, they make more ufe oftheir mouths then oftheir eares. Whereas man whole life is rational!, yea and fpirituall roo, mufl or oughttomakemore tie ofhis cares then ofhis mouth. How loth this reprove all thofewhoare more in airing meats, then in trying words ? or more for tafling, then they are forhear- ing ? It was a complaint of forme in the former age, that they made themfelvesaike bruit bulls, which having both chore pow- ersof hearing and tailing, have yetno regard to hearing, but are all for feedingand eating. They carry it like beafás, and are more braitifh then abeall, who employ their mouthsmore then their cares. A'beafl' is made in that low forme, to live to ear, and worke, and fo to dye ; man is of ahigher forme, next to that of Angelis, and for him to fpend his time in eating and drinking, as ifhis worke lay at his mouth, not at hisear, is to degrade himfelf and lead abruitifh life. The Apofile'brings in fuch bruits fpeak- ing thus, ( a Cor. 15.32.) Letus eat anddrink, for to morrow we ¡ball dye ; not aword of ufing their cares c theyfaynor, cone let us hear the word of Cod, let us feel bread for our foules, but come, let us eat and drink ; now for aman tobe fo much ineat- -ing, as to neglect hearing and meditating, what cloth he but make himfelfe like a beafl of the earth, who fhould be like the Angells
