Chap. 34. . An Expofàtion upon the Book, of J o B. Verf. 7. or wife man is like f ob ? Pófìîbly.fomemay be found among the dreggs of the people or among the common fort like himfelfe, but among men of honour and reputation for wifdone, furely, there are none tobefound like him. Yet force take it ( out of the-tlri6lnefs of the original word) for a man of the lowefl or meaneftcondition ; What man is like fob'? that is, no man, no not of the meanefl degree is like him. And fo the queflion may by carryedunder a threefold notion. Firft;, its avilifying queflion, what man is like Job ? Who is there that hath but the name and face of a man that would doe or freak things as he ? y`ob,in this matter, is worfe then anymart, then the woríl ofmen. He a&s and fpeaksat a lower rare of pru- dence and pietythen many , ifnot then any of the lowef} among the fons of men. Secondly , Wemay lookupon it as an angry paflionate que- lion, a queflioncarrying in it highefl indignation ; what man L, like fob ? who fovaine, rafh, foolish and inconfiderate as he ? I have fcarce the patience to fpeake or think of him. Thirdly,We may take it as anadmiring queflion ; what man- Job ? It is a thingunheardof, even ilupendious prodigie, that aman lhould be or doe as fob. Allforts of men abflaine from or decline, yea fcorne fcorning ( 'cis a thing founbecoming man) but chiefly they that are great, noble and honourable, filch as fob hath been in his time, yet he is turned fcorner. As if he had fayd, Who hath heard the like ? was there ever fuch a mane heardof, who either ufed fuch fcornfull language againfl others,. or layd himfelfe fo open to the fcorne and contempt of-others! What man is dime fob, who drinkethupfcorning like Water ? That's matterof admiration ; Elihu might have found out ma- ny other matters, wherein fob had no fellow; noparallel , fcarce any like him in the world;whofo afllioIed,fohumbled, fo broken,. fo deferredby his owne relations,fo vexed with friends andcom- forters like job ? But he doth nor put the queflion- upon his fuf ferings, but upqn his fan; What man is like, yob; who drinketh up,, fcorning, &c. Drinking is here ufed metaphorically, and fo like- are eating,devouring,an- fwallowing up oftenufed inScrip- ture, to denote that which is done tobe done with muchgreedi -- nefs;,
