Chap. 34. An Expefstion upon the Bóokof J o B. Verf.7 537 gives himfelfe a libe: ty to fcorne others. The firfl words of Da- vrd fpeake this ( Pfd: 1. 1. ) Bfefed is the man that walketh not inthe counfell ofthe ungodly, norflandeth in the war o, ffinners, nor fitteth in the feat ofthe fcornfull. Here are three degrees of fin- ning--; walking,f}anding, fitting : He that fitteth in the feate of the fcornfull, or hash commencedfcorner, bath taken the highell de- gree, and is the chiefeGraduate in the Schooles of fir. Andas (o Mt in the feate of the fcornfull , is the highell degree of finning, fo they that are got into that fear, care nothow long they fit in it, yea, arehardly ever got out, of it.So much that chidingqueluiota or expoflulation of S©/onion doth fully import'( Prov. i. 22.) Tcfëor- 'ozers, howLang will ye delight inlearning ? As ifhehad fayd, When í1a11 it once be ? will ye never have done , nor give over that trade ? Scorners are therefore the woril of men,,becaufe theyde- ¡ide the bell both of things and men ( Prov: 21. a4.) Prouddand haughty fcorner is hisname, who dealer') in proud wrath. Scorners are the childrenof pride. A proud fpirit vents it Idle in fcorn- ing. Pride doth not appeare fo much in apparrell, in gay.clothes and new fangled fafhions ( all which are often ufed as flaggs of pride and vanity ) nor doth pride appeare fo much in praifing our selves ( though there it appeareth much ) as it Both in fcornipg others. Proud fcorner is his name. And as the fcorner is a. proud defpifer ofothers,fo a quarrelfome contender with others, and till he is feparated frommen, there is no:hingbut feparation,no peace amongmen.( Prov: z i. Lo.) Cali out thefcorner, and contention frail goe out ; yeafirife and reproachfhall ceafe; which plainly in- timateth, that firifecannot goe our till the fcorner be call our. And therefore Solomon (Pro:24. 9.) calleth the fcorner an abomi- nation to man. Thus the Scripture lets the fcorner among (inners of the chiefefl rankand firs' forme ;l may fay, he is of the fir(' three, ifnot the firfi of that three.
