Chap. 34. An Expofitiin open the Book of j o B. Verf. r 3. Secondly , His power is univerfall, as toplaces,, and nations ; fme places claime priviledge, and are exempt from the jurif- di&tion of Princes, ifobnoxious perfens get thither, theyare free from the courfe of the Law. There were Cities ofrefuge among. the 3ewes, and SanEluarres in the dayes of old amongus , where . evill-doers couldnot be touçht. But the power of the Lord rea- cheth all places, even to the homes of the Altar ( Pfal; 8 3. 18.) Thou whofe name alone is 3-ehovah, art me high over all the earth. Thirdly , His power isuniverfall, a; inall places, fo over all things ; it extends to the ftarrs of heaven, and to the fowles of the ayre, to the beafts ofthe earth, and to the fillies of the Sea ; towlaatfoever moves in this world ; they are all at the command ofGod, if he dothbut fpeake, they runand executehis will. Fourthly , His power is univerfall, in reference to time; 'tis never out, nor hall ever end; he is King immortall, and King e- ternall, his Kingdome isan everlafting Kingdome. The power of God is an univerfall power in all thefe confderat ons : :Hispower of Governing is of the fame extent,as his power of creating was ; that which he created at once, he governs alwayes. He did not fet up the fabrickof this world, and then leave it to it felfe, but he preferveth and ordereth allthings in it The wel-being, the orderly being of the creature, is as muchof God as the being . of it. Some fay, God madethe world at firit, and fet all the wheeles of it a-going, but now thingsgoe on bychance, by fortune, or by accident,at leaft particular events are not under his government, but come to gaffe as thewifdome or folly of men is moft aétive in the produaionof them. I anfwer, tofet up blind fortune; and chance, yea of the wit and policy of maniasgoverning theworld,is to fet up other Gods in the world ; if chance and fortune, or the wit ofman, govern any part of the world, then-they had apart in making the world. Ifyou divide onepower, you divide the other. For thófe invifi- ble things of God, hiseternal power and God-head, are as much or as evidently feene, irrthe things which are done, as inthe things which aremade. 'Tis true indeed Glsdufeth manybards ingoverningordering, and difpofing the things of this world.. The Princes of t4is world, are eminentlyhis hand, but God Both f not I 583
