6tmo Chap. 34. An Expofition upon the Book,of J o B Verf. r5. duff ofdeath. Dull and deathare neere acquaintance, and all that dy,grow quickly into fleeter acquaintance with the dufl.It is fayd ( PM: 103. r 4.) The Lord knoweth our frame , he remembreth that we are but deft. But what advantage is that to us , that the Lord knoweth the one, and remembreth the other ? I may anfwer as the Apoftle loth to another queftion(Rom: :3. a.) much every way, chiefly, becaufe hewill ditty us and fpareus and deale ten- derly with us, as confidering how frayle we are. Now as it may be our comfort that.God remembreth we are but dull, fo'tis our duty to remember that we arebut duft., and that we mutt to the duff. Shall God remember that we are duff, and thatl nor we _re- member it our felves ?: Did wernore-remember that we are duff, we fhould more prepare for our return to the dull. Yea, I may fay,.we should be more in heaven , if we weremore in our duff ; that is, the graciousand ferious meditation of our natrrtall viler es ándintirmities would provoke us toTooke heaven-wards,andpre- pare fozheaven, where there our naturals bodyes (hall become JPirituall (r Cor: r 5. 44. ) that is, they {hail be like fpirits ( though not turned into fpirirs) living without food or fleep, living free from wearinefs and ficknefs, frompaints and languifh- ments, yeafree from the remoreft feareof ever dying or return- ing againe into duff. Such as thefe and manymore would be our foules advantages, did'weoften (as becomes us) remember that our bodyes are of the earth , and muff (portly be earthagaine. Thus tobe earthlyminded, is the way to be heavenly minded. 'Many are earthlyminded, that is, theymind earthly things, but fewmind that themfelves areearth. Inwhat holy heights and e- levations of fpirit fhouldwe be, if We could fpiritually remember how low we once were, and how low, as toour bodyes, we within a few dayes (hail be. .Laflly, This truth fhould take us off from all creature-confi- dence from trufling in man. Curfed is the man (faith the Lord,Jer: 17: 5.)that trufteth in man,and makethfiefh his arme.'Tis acurfed thing for man to miff inman, becaufe Craft is an honour proper to God ; he alone is tobe trufted And as it is a curfed, foit is at:o . a foolifh Thing to trufl inman. David aGreat Princegiveth us this counfel from God (Pfal: 146. 3, 4.) Put not your craft in Princes, nor in the fanof man in whom there is no help ; his breath .soethforth, he returneth tohis earth ( or to his duff) in that day all
