614 Chap. 34. An Exposition upon the B00%,of f o B. Verf.t7; me and himwhat is right, give us a heart conformable to it, and a readiness of minde alwayes to do it : That's the fcope of his prayer wen he laid, Give the Bing thyjudgements, O Lord, and thy righteotefnef to the King'sfin : Nor do:h he barely pray for the gift of judgement and righteoufnefs, but he puts the ftampof God up-ma them; Give them thy judgements, and thy righteoufnefs. It is poaible for Kingsto have a judgement of their own, and a righteoufnefs of their own, which are not the judgements nor the righteoufnefs of God. For as there is a righteoutì,efs of God, which come being ignorant of, truft to a righteoufnefs of their own for the juftihcatron of their person; fo there is a =ighteouf nefsof God for the government ofman, which fome neglecting, nie only a righteoufnefs of their own, both in condemning and ju- ftifying other mens both perfons and causes ; Princes Ling in Gods place, fhouldexalt the righteoufneffeof God in thegovern- ing of men. And therefore the fame David in his dying font fpake thus (a Sam: z3.3.) He that ruleth over men must be 'NO': ruling in thefeare ofGod; who ever he is he muff be just, and he Haut} be just in the feare of God, which he can never be, but in giving out the righteoufneffe of God ; that is, in dif- penfrng that for righteoufneffe, which is right according to the will of God. And ifhe must doe right thus , how shall he doe ir, if hehate it? nommwill doe that willingly or conftandywhich he hateth ; he that hates right is fo farre from doing it himfelfe, that he cannot abide others should doe it. Whereas agovernQur, isnot only to doe right himfelfe, but to appoynt others to doe ir, and to fee that they doe ir,or elfe topunith them for not doing it. The Rulers of the earth are fayd toBeare thefword ( Rom: r 3.4.) And theyare fayd to be Shields (Pfal: 47. g.) They are shields toproteéé the good, and fwords to take vengeance of thole that doe evill ; both which are the workes of righteoufneffe. And if fo,(hall ever he that hateth right gooerne? andwilt thou condemn him that is wog juft ? JJtort nèpote.Q The fcope of Elihu in the former part of the verse was tode- af qui omnibus monftrate that God is no hater of right, or righteoufneffe, for he amens nonfit, is not only A Governot4i,but The Governou , all the world over, out quicquam or over all the world, and it were a moll abîurd thing, to thinke injujte amt, that he fhould be theGovernour ofthe world, and yet be a hater tsrc: cf
