Chap. ;4. An Expoftion upon the Book, of J o B. Verf.i8. 621 the earth (as indeedCod loath alwaies been, and will ever be) How fheuld hebe unjuff ? wilt thou condemn the rnoft /u.ft ?. Even him who is fojaafi, that he rebukes injuftice wherefoever he findes it, and who can finale it wherefoever it is ? (Pfal. ro5. 14.) He reproved Kings for their fakes, (that is, for the fake of his peculiar people,' when theydid them wrong,) faying,Touch not mine anointed, and do my Prophets noharm : implying, that he trufts Kings with that great power to prote& his anomted, and to fave hisProphets from harm ; andtherefore wouldnot take it well at their hands,if they abufed their power tohurt and aflli& them. This is agood read- ing, but I !halt not infift upon it, though force infifl much upon ir, becaufe I would rather favour our ownTranflation, and carry the Interpretation that way, as containing an argument toprow, that it is a moll wicked thing to condemnGod as unjufl, becaufe men are fcarce any where found fo prefumptuous, or bold, as to fay to a King, Thouart wicked, or to Princes, ye are ungodly. It is much eajier for anyman, much more forgreat men to do evil, then for others to tell them fo: .And as the faults of Princes feldame fide reprovers,fo it requires a great deal ofwifdome, not to commit afault in reproving them. Is itfit tofay to aKing thouart wicked ? Isthis a comfy thing ? Or will Kings endure it ? And if fo, Both it become thee, O fob, to fpeak hardly of God ? Or will he endure it? Elihu did not charge Yob with fpeaking evil of Goddire&ly ; but would intimate to him, that while he was fo unquiet under the alfii&inghand of God, and preffed him fo of- ten for a further hearing of his caufe, he didvery dangeroufly re- fle& upon his Juflice ; and that feting we fund in awe of Kings and Soveraigne Princes , and dare not misbehave our felves before them, nor let fall an unreverend word concerning:. them, how durft he prefume to fpeakany thingunfeemly of God ? i it fit to fay to a King, Thouart wicked. Kings are fuprearn, they are cloathed with Soveraignepaver over all perfons within their Dominion ; Ìs it therefore fit to ufe fuch courft language`, finch down-right unhewen. fpeeches in any
