By this appellation, worldly Princes, the Princes of this world are expreüed in facred language, that fo their very names might minde them of being fuch, and of doing fuch things asare the ornament both of their perfons and places. There twohigh Ti- tles in the Text, Kings and Princes, are fomtimes taken for the fame ; and in ftridìett fence, Princes are the next degree, or but one remove fromKings. Again, Thereare force called Princes, who have the fupreame power within their own Territories. Others are called Princes, whohave adelegated or derived power from Kings. The Apo- file fpeaks of fuch, ( r Pet. 2. i 3.) charging the Church and people of God, tofubmit toevery Ordinance ofman for theLords fake, whether to the King as fupream ; or unto Governors as . fent by him, for thepunifhment ofevil doers, andfor the preifeof them that do well. Elihubrings inboth,for the fuller confirmation of his point, and the ftrongerconvielionof fob, Is it fit to fay to a King, thou art wicked ? and to Princes (who Stand abouthis Throne, and ferve him in his Gòverntnent) yeareungodly ? Ye regard neither right nor reafon, neither what s fit tobe done, nor what to be advited ? That's the fence of the words as they are an argument from the lefs t6 the greater ; If it be anuncomely and undecent thing (faith Ehhu) to fay to a King thou art wicked ? and to Prin- ces ye are ungodly ? Firft, Menarenot all of a rank, or all are not of an equal gate in thie world. vo , This Text fpeaks of Kings and Princes ; and the moll of men are inferiour not only toKings, but to Princes. God hath not mademan upon earth as minims in writing, all of a height ; but as in the alphabet of Letters, f' reare longer anddeeper then o- thers ; fo in the Alphabet ofmankinde, foire men are bigler and higherthen others. Kings andPrinces are butmen,yet they are men in agreat letter, or they are amongmen as the Aleph among the letters, which as it is fidi in order,, fo it lignifies 'a Prince, a Chief, a Leader.
