God doth not alwayes powre otit the farne Judgements upon all thofe that have done the fame wickednefs, ( the whole world would be in blood if he did fo) but he takes here and there one that the refi bethinking themselves, and ( with repentingE- phraim ) fmiting upon their thigh, may prevent the Lord from ímtnng them at all, efpecially from firiking them as wicked men in theopen light of others. It is fayd (Rev: 1 x.13. ) that, after ky agreat earth=quake the tenth part of the City fell, and in the earth-quake were Elaineofmen feven thoufand, the remnant were af. frighted andgaveglory to the God of heaven. And Purely the rea- fon whyafter one man hath been chaflifed or firieken,others take their turnes too, is becaufe they didnot take warning by his cha- fiifements and fufferings. Thirdly, God firikes fame wicked men in open view , or in the place of beholders for the comfort of his ownpeople, and for their encouragement (Pfal 58. io, xz.) The righteous(hall de gladwhen he feeth the vengeance ; not that he (hall be glad of the vengeance, purely as it is a hurt , or a fuffering to the creature, but the righteous (hall be glad when he feeth the vengeance of God, as it is a fulfilling of the threatning of God againfi the fin of man,andan evidence of his own holinefs. God fhall(hootfuddenlyat thewicked , all thatfee thesis(ball flee a- way ; that is, they that fee howGod deales with them, thali get away, leatl ruine overtake them, or they fhall flee away ( which is their bell courfe) from fuch courfes and praetices as procured them that ruine. Thus the righteous rejoyce when they fee the vengeance, yea they wafh their feete in the blood oftheungodly that is, they get comfort and encouragement by feeing the Lord avenge their caufe againff their adverfaries.
