7o8 Chap.34. An Expofition upon the 3ook, of J o B. Verf. 7. `two ad pru- had never heard of, at leaf} never underftood the Law of God, denriam &fa- which is the rule of life. They confidered not the wayes of God piesriampra- to walke in them, as Mofes exhorted thepeople ofIfrael (Deut; fFitom rerun egendarum 29. 9.) Keep therefore thewords of this covenant to doe therm. periner. Secondly, The wayes of God are thofe wherein himfelf walk- eth, the works of God are the wayes of God; the works ofhis providence either in mercy or in judgement, either in doing good or in doing evil (that is, pxnal evil)thefe are the wayes of God; in thefe God lhewes himfelfas ina way, in there he goeth forth inhis power and goodnefs, in his mercy and juflice. All there divine glories and perfeaions are difcovered in the works of God. Thus David is to be underílood when he faith (Pfal. 25. io.) All thewayes of God are mercy and truth, to them that fear him, and keep his Covenant; that is, all the providential- works of Godare mercyand truth ; though all of them are not mercy in thematter, or precifely taken as works done, though' none of them are mercy,. refpecuing fome persons towhom they are done, for many of them are materially chaftifements, afflic}i- ons,and croffes to goodmen, and all ofthem are wrathand judge- ment to evil and impenitently wicked men ; yet they areall mer- cy in the ilfue or refult of them to good men, or to thofe who fear God, and keephis covenants. For whether he do good, or whetherhedo evil, whetherhe wounds, or whether he heals, all there providential wayes of God, are as truth in themfelves, fo- mercy to hispeople ; or, as the Apoflleconcludes (Rom. 8. 28.) 7hey work togetherforgood to them that love God;andare the called. according to hispurpofe. In both thefe fences we mayexpound this Text, They would not confider'any of hie wayes; that is, they would neither confider the Lawes of God, which were the way, wherein they fhould walktowards him,. ner would they confider the works of God, which are the wayes wherein himfelf walketh towardsthem. This was the fpirit of that evil generation intend., ed in this Scripture ; theyhad not much trnderftanding in, and lefs confederation of thewayes of God. Hence, firft we may take notice, Elihudoch not fay, they did' not.confrder his wayes; but, they would not ; It was not fo much anaí}ofcarelefnefsand negligence as of contempt and rebelllious . refolution.. f3ence2,
