Stich as thefe are Pimple by- pocrites,,bcing pleafed with a shell infieadof a kernel, and with a.(haddow, nzgle&ing the fdbfiance. Thefe hypocrites are ina very deplorable condition; yet thefe are not the -hypocrites which 1 intend in this point,or have hereto do with. There are a fecond fort of hypocrites, commonly called grofs hypocrites, fuch as hold that out which they know theyhave nor, ;ücn as know they have nothing in or of'Religion, but the thew of it ; Inch aswork byart, or with a kinde of force upon themfelves in all the good they do, and duties they perform towards God.,. and about the things of God. They do nothing as the Apofile faith Timothy did (Phil, 2 20.) naturally,, I have no man like- m.'nded, who will naturally-careforyour fiate. The word naturallyy, is not there oppofed to fj'iritually, but to artificially, or to for- cedly. What a fincere heart Both in the thingsof God, he doth it naturally, that is, it floweth from an inward principle, it is not fgrced from him, butthe Hypocrite, doth allias it were by.a kinder of art or force u'honhimfelf. Is it fach a fai that lhave chófen, a dayfor aman to oflilt his foul , &c. and then for manydayes to aflli& both the fouls and bodies of hisbre- thren ? or to abfiain a day from meat, and glut himfelf with fn ? That's the (train ofthe hypocrite, he (as I may fay) main- tains anddrives two trades, he bath a trade for God, and the wayes of God, and he huh a-trade for fin, and the wayes of wickednefs ; this is his courfe,(jer.. 11.2-)Thsu art neer in their mouth, but far -'rem their rc.'ns ; they fpeäkof xhee, but they have nodefiresto thee, no affe&ions for thee, thou- art far enough from theirreins ; they a& a part inReligion, but they neither par .take of Religion, nor with it,.
