Chap. 34, An Expofition upon the Boo,of J o B. Verf. 30. 763 Thirdly, There are others, who betides that they aregrofs hy- pocrites, may alfobe called defigning or plotting hypocrites;for they that ferve God with a referve,as to any fin orby- way,ufùally ferve him with a defigne, or for anend of their own. Chrifr (Matto. 13. t4.) fpeaking of grofs hypocrires, fuch as the Pharisees were faith, they devour widdotos houfes, and ina pretence male long pray- ers ; they pray long in a pretence, or under apretence ; that is, they have a plot or a defigne in prayer, they pray, not purely to enjoy communion with God, nor purely to honour God ; but theymake laic of prayer, and under pretence of that, do other work. Chrift loth not there fpeakagainfr, nor difparage long prayers, as force do, to the great reproach of the Spiritandgrace of God, but he chargeth thenwith praying long in a pretence : pray heartily, and thenpray as long as you will ; other due cir- cumfrances being obferved , the more you pray, the more is God pleated. Butwhether prayers are long or thorn, if done in a pretence, or with a defigne co do mifchtefto others, or only toget forneworldly prost and advantage to our felves (as thofe Phartfees prayed) they are an abominatièrí to the Lord. Now that I may a little more unmask this plotting hypocrite, I will fhew youa fourfold plot o, deigne, which fuch hypocrites have in their'mofizealous profellions of, and'pretendings to Re- ligion. Firt+, They defigne their own praife or efrinarion among men; Chrifr makes this ditcovery in his Sermon upon the Mount, (Matth.6.e 5,) Do not at the hypocrites, for all they do, (whether they give aimes, or pray, or fafr,) is not for the glory of God, but that they mayhave glory of men, and bepointed at for cha- Eeeee a ritable
