chap. 34. An Expofition upon the Book, of J o B. Verf, 30, 77 S He will dsfcover thefecrets of the heart, and bring to light thehid.. den things of darl¿nefe ; which, what are they, but the hypocriti- call defignings of men ? We fay, murderwill out, and 'tis as true, Hppocrifie will out. The Lord many times brings it out to the fhame ofhypocrites in this life , and he will bring it out to the confufion of all their faces, in that great day, when the fecrets of all hearts (hall be revealed. Thirdly, Take heed of this designing hypocrite ; for as all who continue in it fhaü be difcovered, fo ufually they continue in it; your plotting cunning hypocrites,are very rarely converted. Simple hypocrites (in the notion toucht before) are often con- verted ; all unconverted perlons that make anyprofe(lion in re- ligion are hypocrites, and many of them are smple ones, they hope all is well withthem, and that theyhave grace, though they haveit not, thefeare oftenconverted, but grofs deigning hypo- crites, of what rank or degree foever, are rarely converted. This . is it whichChrifl laid to the Pharifees, (Math. 21. 31.) Publi- cans and Harlots enter into theKingdome of heaven before you Publicans were the worfl fort of men, and harlots were the worn fort ofwomen,yet thefe repented and received the Gofpel fooner then the hypocritical Pharifees. The Evangelifi made a like re- port of them(Luke 7. 29, 3o.) all thepeople (that is, the com- mon fort of people) that heard him, and the Publicans,, juJhfeed God, being baptizedwith the baptifine of 7ohn, but the Pharifees- and Lawyers rejefled the counfel ofGod againfl themfelves,being net baptized of bim ; yea, as Chrifi fpeaks in the next words, they were piped to, but they would not dance .; they were wept to,, but they wouldnot mourn. All thefe various difpenfations of the Gofpel were fruitlefs to them; neither amore pleating nor a more fevere lvliniftery won any thing upon that generationof defiigning. hypocrites.. Fourthly, confider, As hypocrites are hateful toGod, foGod will deal with them accordingly ; hewill for ever feparar"e them fromhis prefence, and cart them out of his fight. A hypocrite bath adoubleminde, a divided heart; he is not half enough. for God, (indeed he is nothingat all for God) and he, is toomuch;, yeaaltogether foriiimfelf, and therefore he íhall' haveno-hing;at all of God, not fo much as a fight of him. It is laid in the I 3tht of lob, The hypocritefhall not come before him :. Suck as we hate we;
