Secondly, As to the vitioufneffe or falfeneffeof ir,N.e fJ eweth them their work, that is, either what they hid done c hIch was e- vil in the matter of it, or what they had done in an evil manner, though in it felf good ; he lheweth them the evil of their work, the irregularity, the crookedneffe, and fintulnefle of their work. That this is the meeting, appeareth plainly in the words that fol- low, Then hefheweth thins their work, and their tranfgreSion ; that is, that there is fome tranfgreffion or fault, pof iibly many faults and trangreffions,intheir work. Good is Gods work in us, evil is our work againa the mind of God. Sin is often cal- led the workof our hands, (Pfal. 28.4.) Give them after the workof their hands, render to them theirdefert ; that is, what they have deserved by their fins., Ol¡ofesdeclared his fear and holy jealoufie concerning the children of Ifrael in this Language, (Veut. 3 t. 29.) I bwem that after my departure, ye will utterly corrupt yourfelves, becaufeyewill do evilin thefight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger by the work_of`your bawds. Idolatry is fpeci- ally called the work of mans hands, becaufe Idolatersetcher wor- flaip that asa god,or Godby that,which their hands have wrought (Rev. 9. zo.) They repented not of theworks of their hands, that they mould not worfhip Devils, and Idols ofGold, and Silver, and Breffe, &c. Yet Idolatry is much more the work of the heart, than of the hand. And as Idolatry, fo any other fin, whether of heart or tongue, may be called the work of our hand, it being that which ismoli properly our work, though originally theDe- vils work. Asto pardon fin, is properly the work of God, fo to commit,fin, its properly the workofman.
