Chap. 36. eflrr Expofrtion r¢pova theBook of Je s. Vert*. al. 2 3 9. Thirdly, To ferve him is to do his Will only;. fo faith the Scripture, Him only fhalt thou ferve. If it may be fuppofed, that we could do the whole Will of God, and yet do the will o any other, or do our own will too, in any thing contrary to his, we were not his fervants ; if we ferve him not alone, or if we ferve him not only, that is, if in fervingman we aim not chief ly at the ferving of him, or if all our fervices to men are not fub fcrvienr, or not in fubordination to the fervice of God, we ferve himnot at all. Fourthly,'I may add this alfo, To ferve God is ro do every thing Lander this contemplation, that, what we do is the Will of God. 'Tis verypoffible for a man to do that which is the Will of God, and yet not to ferve him in doing it; which we never do till we do it becaufe it is the, Will of God. His Will mutt be not only the Rule ofwhat wedo, but the very Reafon why we do it, elfe our doings are not his fervings. They that do not at- tend this ferve God but as a beat} may ferve him, a beaft may do that which is the Will of God ; the inanimatecreatures ferve him fo ; We hear of Jiormy winds and tenspeffs fulfillingkmwill, ( Pfal. 148.) All living, yea, livelefs creatures do that which is his Will, but they do not attend this, that it is his Will which they do. So that, I fay, to do his Will, not confdering_ that it is his Will, is to ferve him no otberwife thanbeaíls, or than the winds or itormesfern him : And to do his Will,.aym- ing at our own wills or ends, is to ferve him but as a hypocrite ferves him. A. hypocrite doth not ferve God in what hedoth,, though he doth many things which are materially the Will of God, becaufe in all he minds his own will more than the Will of God, Lafily, We must ferve God as Sous,. ((Mal.. 3. 17.) A Son fervethno lefs than a Servant, yea much more, though not as a fervant ; for he knoweth more of his Fathers mind than a meer fervant doth(fab. a 5./ 5.)and he knoweth, that he fhall have alfo, though not Wages at the end of every day, yet the inheritance in theend. Obadiah was the proper nameofone good man, and it is a name common to all good' men.; they are (as that word imports) Servants ofthe Lord. It is a common Theam to urge men toferveGod, but it is a rare thing to be indeeda fervant of God.: To ferve Cod is the Summe and Marrow.of all knowledge In,
