Chap. 36. Qn Gxpafitian upen the .8ao of 1 o D. Verf. t 3. 257 feared ; Therefore I intend not here to revive that fubjec`I, but thall only a little open the additional tearm o: am1,1ii cation which is here put upon the hypocrite. Elihu doth not fay barely, hypo- crites heap up wrath, but Thehypocrites In he.vt heap up wrath, as implying fotne fpecial character and brand of h)poc the upon the perfons here aimedar. An hypocrite in heart is no more but this, nor is it any thing lets thananheartyhypocrite ; he is one that is not to the halves, but whollyhypocritical; he than is but half with God (filch is thehypocrite)is wholly profane, wholly wicked. The fame word which fignaéyethanhypocrite fignifyeth a profane per- fon,and fo`we put it In the margine of this text , The hypocrite, or theprofane in heart. Thisexpreliìon is very paralel with that of the Apollle Paul ( Col. I. 21. ) re that were fometimes a lieeared and enemies inyour mind, by wicked workes, yet now bath he reconci- led. He doth notonly call natural men enemies to God, as indeed they all are, ( the wifdome of theflefh is enmity again f1' God) But he calls them enemies in their minds, that is, lush as have a mind to beenemies, or fuch as have a good will to do evil. So here, an hypocrite inheart is a man heartily hypocritical;whofoever is an hypocrite is an hypocriteinheart ; Hypocrifie,is that which lyerk at the bottome,ir is an heartfiin: though hypocirte a& and vent it fellat the tongue, and by the hand, yet all hypocrifie lyeth at the heart; neverthelefs, everyhypocrite is not ( ft: ie}ly taken) anhy- pocrite in heart. The hypocrite in heart is oppo'red to the up- right in heart, ( Pfal. 92. t t. ) The hypocrite in heart hash a heart as full of hvpacrifie, as the upright in heart would have hearts full of uprighcnefs. Yet further to charaeîerize the hypo- crite inheart, Take three three confiderations to dear it ; 7),1ts nhe) Flail, an hypocrite in heart is one who doth evil, not our of tni'.-1u, eft take, but out of deuigne ; not becaufe he cannot do otherwife, but becau a he will nor, and is refolved on ir ; fuch a f.in:`ul piece or fuch a piece of finlulnefs is the hypocrite in heart ; he fins as he fhould love and ferve and obey God, with all his hear. Secondly, as this hypocrite doth evil upon dehàn, foallohe doth good with a wicked tnind. It is pofftble for a man todo good unfincerely, or not tobe fincere in the doingof ir, and yet not to do it with a wicked mind and purpofe, or with a bare delta.
