Thus we may underfand that of Solomon, lately opened upon another occafion, ( Pray. 21. 27. ) Thefa- crifte of the wicked is an abomination .to the Lord ; how match more when he bringeth7t with a wicked mind ! Aman maybewicked as to his Bate, yet not do a thing with a wicked mind, not bring a facrilìce ( which includeth all holy fervices) with an unholy pur- pole but the hypocrite in heart when-ever he doth any good, hath a plot in it ; as he alwayes ferves God with a referve, he bath fomewhat that he doth with hold,he comethby halves, fo he alwayes ferves Godwith a defign. He may make a fair mew, and a great noire in profeffion, but ever he hath force end of his own in it. yehu laid, Come fee my zeal for God. He was about a good work, the defiroying of Ahabs Houle, andBads Priefts, this he called zeal for the Lord ; but he did all this with a wicked mind; for the great thing upon his heart was to get into the Throne,*o be a King , he Made ufe of all chofe fpecious as of zeal only as a fiirrup toraife hintfelf into the (addle, the matter he aimed at was to efiabtií31 the kingdom of Ifrael to hitnfelfand his pofìerity. That's a fecond thing ; as the hypocrite doth evil purpofely, to when he doth good he hath a purpole, a plot in ir, more than is, good ; he doth it not, either for the honour of God,or or the en- joyment of God, which are the belt ends of every and without a pure eye, without which no acaion , how good fo- ever in it Pelf, is good to, or turnes to the good of the at-tor. Thirdly , The hypocrite in heart, I conceive, is loch a one as knows himfelf tobe an hypocrite. There are many hypocrites, who little thinke that they are.hypocrites, yea, they may think themfelves very uptight and honeh in what they do; ignorant de- luded fouls, underhand not their own cafe. Laodicen was wret- ched and miferable, thefe are falle and hypocritical!, but know it not.As force fudge, or rather mil-judge themfelves hypocrites, who are upright in the maine with God , and honeh at heart, C low frequent are fuch complaints, and fe1'f-wronging accufati-
