3co Verf. 18. elk Expofatien upon tJ e Book of J e B. Chap. 30. and whenwe fay, he conlumeth Sinners in his wrarh,or his w.ath confumeth (inners, we are not to underfland it of a confumption as to being, but only as to a well or comfortabe being ; for not only the fouls, but the very bodies of fanners Thall remain in this fire of thewrath of God for ever unconfirmed. The bodies of the dam- ned (hall be railed again at the great day, and being re- united to their fouls, both fl,ai abide unconfumed in the fire of this cbnlum- ing wrath eternally. The great dread of ordinary fire is, that it confumes what it burns, but the greatefldread of this fire is,that it confumes not that which it burns. O therefore take heed of the wrath of God, the wrath of God is terrible as to corporal and.temporal judgements, much more as to fpirituall andeter- nal judgments ; that is, as the fire of his wrath burns both inter - nally and eternally . Becaufe there is wrath, beware, Left he take thee away with hisflroke.. Here the danger is exprea. If the Lord be angry, he can foon take thee awaywith a flroke he can remove, yeahurry thee away out of all thy prefent joys and enjoyments, to everlaamg forrows. The word imports a violent remove. The {coke here fpokenof is like that (Chap. 24. 26.) He ffriketh them as wicked mea, in the open fight of others ; that is,he Thames them as well as punih- eth them ; as he arikes them with his hand to their confufion, fo he arikes or claps his own hands together in diriion, as 'cis raid (Chap. 27.23.) Alen fkall clap their hands at him, andPad hifs him out of his place; we may take it in both there fignificatj- ens ; Left he take thee away with,{ ffroke ; that is, lefl he firike thee foas to make an utter end of thee, or left he take thee away wirb derifion, clapping his hands at thee, and pouring contempt upon thee. Havewe not reafon to beware of that wrath, which in eitherfenfe can take us away with his llroke ? Yet T conceive a third fenfe may be given of there words, Left he take, thee away with hit fyroke, that is, lea he take thee away fuddenly, even as fwuddenly as a {rake can be given. Hence Note ; Firfl, God can prefentlyfirike to delirution, He can take the firongefi away with a aroke, ate can do kwi h one firoke. The Lord needs not Hand cutting and fla'íhing,hack- ing pttÌ7, Cttm coml;;o fiOrre.
