Second- ly, the word rendred cometh between, fignifieth an Interceffor, or one that prayeth, as alto an oppofer, who ¡lands op againft and re- lifis the forceof another. Thirdly, theword rendred wife figni- fieth ( when derived from another root) a friend or familiar. Fourthly, the word rendred cartel, fignifieth alto poffeffon, or t hat which is pofleffed, and taken from anotherroot, emulation or flrife. Fifthly, the word which we tranflate as an Adverbe, alfá, fignifieth likewife anger. Sixthly, the word rendred vapour, f g ntheth an afcenfion, or going up ; and fo plants or herbs, which grow out of the ground and afcend into theair according to their growth, are elegantly expreffedby it. All thefe differences found in the tingle tearms, are made tile of by Interpreters, as will appear while I give you a tafle of three different tranflations. Firft, The commonLatine tranflator renders thus, In his hand, hehideth the Light, and commands it is come again ; hefpeakrof it, or declares it to hisfriend, that it is his pofefon,and that be may afcend or come to it. This rendring is matvelous different from ours, yet there is force footing for it in the Original, and it may receive a ufeful fence. The wholetext being accordingly expounded as an argument of Gods great favour togodly men; fromwhom, though he at any time hideth the light, yet, tis but for a time, he commands is to return again, and tells them as his friends, light is their poffef- lion, and that at laft they (hall afcend up into light.
