David an- iwers Meteorologically as well as Theologically , he anlrfers frcm the Clouds (verf, 3. ) The Voyce of the Lord is upon the Water;, the Godof,glory thundreth ; the Lord is capon many waters.; The voyce ofthe Lord is powerful, the voyce of the Lord is lull of Alajefy. As if he had faid, Although the Lord Jefus_Chritl will not fet up an outward, pompous, political Kingdome, filch as that of Cyrus or Alexander, &c. yet by the Minidry of the Go- fpel he will ere } a fpiritual Kingdome, and gamer to himfelf a Church, that f}.gall abide for ever, out of all the Nations of the earth : Forthe Gofpe! (hall be carryed and preached to, not on- ly the people cf 1frael, the Jews, but to the qentiles all the world over, that the minds of men may be awakened, enlightned, and moved with that unheard of Doeirine of Salvation by Chrif}, which had beenhid from Ages and Generations. And though many fhall he hardned againf , and oppofe that glad- tydings, yet becaufe theG'odofglorythundereth, that is, be- cattle the voyce ofthe Lord is powerful andfull ofMajefly ; he ac- companying the Minif}ry-of the Gofpel with power and terror like that ofThunder, home to the Confciencesof-men, for their conviction and converfion, therefore it fhall do great andglori- ous things, fubduing the greateft and f}outef} {inners to the-obedi- ence of his Will. This Thunder will oaf!. down the (bong holds of fn,and every thing that exalteth itfelffagainfi thelnowledgeo fGod, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Chrif, (2Cor. t o. 4, 5.) This is it which the Prophet David ìn'end- eth (according to this allegorical interpretation ) by the effe&s of Thunder, elegantly expreffed ( verf. 5, 6, 7, 8.9. ) The oyce of the Lord4breaketh the Cedars, yea, the Lord6reaketh the Cedars of Lebanon ; that is, proudand high-minded men, who are ( in their own conceit) as tallas Ceda, thefe he will make to fee that they are but fhrubs, thefe hewill humble and break heir hearts by true repentance;for the pride of their beasts, and all the abominations of their lives. Further (verf. 6.) He maketh them alfa to skip like a Calf, Lebanon and Syrion like a young tini- corn ; that is, the Lord by his thundering po:ve fui voyce, fi f}, will make them skip as frighted with fear,and fecondly,as revived with joy.
