The meanefl of men cannot excufe their ignorance of the works of God, feing the Text and Point tell us, God drives themmany times outof the field, home to their houfes, and will not let them do a flroak of work more abroad ,on purpofe that they might know his work. Hence note, Thirdly; The aim and intendment of God in keeping tas at any time from oar work, is that we may knowmore ofhis work!. It isa great part ofour wifdom to anfwer the defignes of God in all his providences tous. We feldom think what God irtends by a wet day, by a rainy day, by a tempefiuous day, welittle think the aim of God in calling us from our works, is to call us to the confideration of his work. Some men would never find a time to bellow their thoughts upon the works of God, if God did not take them off from their own work ; they would never be at lei- fure,, if be did not give them a leifure, a vacation time, and ashere in this text, feal up their hand. God path various wayes to rake men off from the hottefl purfuits of their own works ; he takes many off from them by ficknefs, he binds them as prifoners to their beds; others are taken off from their own bufinefs by pro- per imprìfonmenr, and refiraint of liberty; and why ? what is the reafonof this ? is it not that they may know his work, that they may well confider the dealings of God with them ?A lick bed is a School, and fo is a Prifon, where we flaould flue'yboth the Word and Worksof God. Let us remember, when, ever God rakes us off from our Callingsby ficknefs, or refiraineth our liberty by im- priConment, his gracious purpofe is, that we may know his work. Pofiibly when we h d liberty to go about our own work,we could find little, or would nor find much leifure to meditate upon the works of God. Well, faith God, 3 fee I mull take you off from your works, elfe you will never be Students in mine. Thar's the effect% of grow and Rain, with reference toman, Hefealerh atp tin. hand ofevery man., that all men may (¿Nomhis work; But here we haveanother effeól, with relpe6 tobeafis.. 481
