'I. 58a Verf. 19, an E.spoftron opon the Book, of J o B. Chap. 39. Firfl, He cannot fee what he fhould be, and what he is com- manded tobe, holy, ju(I and righteous. Secondly, He cannot fee 'what he (hould do, or is commanded to dc, jufl: and righteous things. Thirdly, By realer of this darknefs he. cannot fee, what he ought not to do, or is commanded not to do, unjufl, evil an .1 un- righteous things. Hebath not a dilcerning about either the affir- mative or the negative part of divine coutmandments; andhence it cornes to pals, that as he doth not what he ought, fo he doth what he ought not. Fourthly, By realen of this darknefs, it muff needs be, that he cannot fee what he bath done again(i the commandment, his fins of commiflion, nor what he bath negleeled to do according to the commandment, his fins of Otnilliion. Fifthly, If io, he cannot fee what he ought to repent of, and turn from. Some repent not of that which they fee to be evil, but no man can repent of that, in particular, which he feeth not tobe evill. Igrant every godly man makes it his dayly work, to re- pent of his unknown fins,as well as of thofe which he knows (Plod. a9. r 2.)tv, o can tenderftandhi3 erronrs? thatisall the errours, wanr drings and miflakes of his life; and therefore Davidprayed in the doleof the verfe, cleanfe thou mefrom fecretsfaults, chat is, from thole faults and failings which are ferrets to me, or which I know not of. But though a man may truly repent of his unknown fins, yet roman repents of fin,who doth not know fin. Sixthly,By reafon of darknefs a man doth not fee, norknowes he the things that he hopes for ; he pofiìbly bath great hopesof hea- ven, or of eternal life, yet knowes not in anymeafure what they are indeed, nor how to order his fpeech about either, becaufe he is in darknefs. So then, the Rate of an unregenerate perfon is darknefs, and therefore he cannot fee at all, and much darknefs may remain in a perfon regenerate , and therefore he cannot fee all ( iohn a. 5.) Clod is light, and in him there is no darknefs at all ; but though the people of God have light' and are light, yet in them there isdarknefs. And becaufe tiwherefoeverignorance is, there is darknefs, according to the degreeof that ignorance, we may take thefe Inferences from it. Firfl, To he in an ignorant conditionL. to be in a veryuncertain condition , for luch are in dærkr efs. Now, as Citriff fpeaketh (7obn le. 35.)
