Canft thou reckon theMoons or months that they fulfil?To this the Prophet alludes (fer.z.z4.) fpeaking of the wildeAP that fnuffs up the wind at her pleafure; that is, who takes pleafure, or (as the Margin reads it) The defre of .wbsfèheart is tof'rnJf'upthe wind; in her occafion (faith he) who can turnher away ? He compares wanton vain perfons,idolatrous and fuperflitious perlons efpecially, who of all, others are the wantonnefl and vatnefl perlons, to an Afs, when (he is in the heat of her lull and pleafure ; all they.that leek her, willnot weary themfelves, that is, they will not weary themfelves to leek her, while fhe is in that condition, but in ber month theyfball find her, that-is, when fhe is burdened with young, when her for- rows and pains are neer coming upon her, then the maybe dealt with. Thus the Lord would (hew his people, that however be- ing fo lu(ly, fo wanton,, there was no dealingwith them, yet a month of forrowwas coming upon them, even as upon one with young, wherein they fhould feel, and be under fuch fad pains, as would burden them to purpofe (as we fay) and then they would befound, and might be fpoken with.. Wilde Affes have their months, their months of bearing, and their month of bring- ing forth ; about thofe and this the Lord enquires of rob, Can(f thou number the months that they fulfil ? The queflion is not fo to be underflood,, as if the number of the monthswhich they fulfil were fe many that they could not be numbred ; but the Lord fpeaks thus, becaufe of the uncertainty of the time (as toman) when thofe months are fulfilled. David prayed (Pfal. 39. 4.) Lord, fhew me thenumber of my dayes ; not as if the number of Ms dayes were fomany, that he could hardlyfind out the num- ber of them Arithmetically, but being fo uncertain, he needed the Lords inflruélion to teach him how to count the number of them fpiritually..
