But St.Paul following, as I remember, theSeptuagint, renders them paflìve- ly, That thou mayett overcome when thouart judged. As if he had fail, Some take upon them co judge God (they who judgehim, contendwith him) that is, they judge and paffe fentence upon his works now (faith the Apatite) Let Godbe true, and everyman a liar , that thou mightef be juftified in thy fayings , and mighteft overcome when thou art judged; that is,that all men may feeand fay thouart righteous , though thou afflief tbegodly (for they fen) and though thou condemnef the wicked , for they fin and repent not of their fins. Thefe two Scriptures confidered either apart, or compared to- gether (betides many more which might be called into thisfer- vice) area clear proof that there are Contenderswith God about his works. Yet poffibly fome may fay , cutely there are none to be found fo boldand prefumptuous ; What contendwith God ? Ianfwer,Pii ff,There are tomewhodo it veryopenly,avowedly, and with a bare face ; they flicknot to fpeak their dif- fatisfa&t- onconcerning the works of God ,and belch out blafphemyagaina what he path done , or is doing in the world. Such cloubrlefTc were they, of whom it is faid (1(4.8.2 I.) They (hall paffe through it hardly beftead and hungry ; and it Ball come to paffe , that when they be hungry , they !hall fret themfelves, and curfe their King and their God , and loop, upward ; not in faith and patience , as they who in fuch extremities call eartíeflly and hurnblyuponGod, but inpafliion and vexation, as they Whowickedly curfe God, and depart from him. Such alto are they fpokenof (Rev:, 6.9.) who being fcorched with great heat at the pouring out of thefourth vial upon the Sun , blafphemed the Name of God , who had potter over thofe plagues , and repented not, togive him glory. Secondly, I anfwer, There are many who do-this fecretly, or within their teeth ; they bite in their words, yet 'cis the lan- guage of their hearts in tumulcuating thoughts,arifing and working_ there about the works of God : and thus agood man, a fob (who was a good man of the firm form) may be found contending with the works of God.
