Chap. 40. an Expofttion upon the Book, of J o B. Verf. 2. down as well as in building up , in rooting up as well as inplant- ing. Now if there be a rightcoufnefs in all the wayes and works ofGod , who (hall 'contend with him about any of his wayes or works ? Thirdly , All the works ofGodhave aninfinite wifdom in there; they are done wifely , even in exaae(twisdom ; and (hall we foolsconte.nd with him, who is not onely a wife God , but the God onely wife (Rom. 16. 27.) and all whòfe works are done in, and according CO the Idea or platforme of his own infinite and e- ternal wifdom. The foohfhnefs ofGod (faith the Apoflle, t Cor. i. 25.) is wifr than men; that is, the wifeft men are meet fools toGod ; or that work ofGod , which fome men call foo- lìfhnefs, is infinitely more wifelydone, than the wifely work that the wifea men in the world ever did , or can do , with all their wifdome. Fourthly , Let all that fear and love God, efpecially, take heed ofcontending with God about any of his works ; for God is good to all fuch in all his works, and all his works are good to fuck. Shall any contend with God about that which is for their own good ? Not onely are thole works of God good to fuch which are good in themfelves , that is, which we call good , beingfa- vourable providences , and for our comfort and fupport in this world ; but even thole works of God which we call croft provi- dances , or providences which bring the Croffe with them , are all good to fuch, even to all them that love gob; and are the cal- led according to his ptsrpofe (Rom. 8. 28.) Shall they contend with God about any thing, who hear and maybeaffured , that he hath an intendment of good to them in all things ? (Pfal. 73. r.) Tru- ly God isgood to Ifrael ; that is, though he affHts them , and the Cupbe very bitter which he gives them to drink , yet he is good to them. Or thus , Truly God, not the world (or though the world be not) is good to Ifrael. Once more, we may take the Pfalmif} thus, TrulyGod isgood tourael, not fo (as to them) to the world, though (as it followeth in the l'falme) they enjoyne- ver fo much worldly good. There Confiderations may perfwade all not to contend with God about his works, towhich I (hall adde onely this counfel. If the works of God are grievous to us at any time , let us go the right way towork inour Contendings with him,For I donor urge this 503
