Chap. 4o. an Expoßtion upon the Book of J O B. Verf. ra 527 J O- B, Chap. 4o. Verf. 6,7 8, 6. Then anfn'ered the Lordunto Tob out ofthewhirl- .. wind, and faid; 7. Gird up thy loyns now li&e a man ? Twill demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. 8. Wilt thou alfo difannul my judgement ? wilt than condemn me, that thou mayfl be righteous. TN the former verfe Job gave out in the plain field, confefling himfelf overcome, not by rigour and force of arms, but by reafon and flrength of argument, or rather by that which is above all reafonsand arguments, the foveraign power and authority of God ; and thereupon he refolved tomeddle no more, to anfwer no further ; and thar, though he had fpoken once, yea twice, yet he would not proceed, he would adde nomore, he had enough of ir, he had already fpoken too much, muchmore(with refpe& to God) than came to his (hare. Hereupon the Lord, at this6th verfe, begins again to fpeak and anfwer ; and his anfwer is contained and continued quite through this fortieth Chapter, to- gether with the whole one and fortieth, and in it we may confi- der thefe four things diflin&ly. Firer, A preface, at the 6th verfe ; Then anfwered the Lord onto Jobout of the whirlwind, andfaid. Secondly, We have here a challenge, at the 7th verfe ;- Gird up thy loyns now like a man ; I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. Thirdly, Wehave in this anfwerof God, a reproof of job, or a vehement expoílulation with job, in the 8th and 9thverfes; Wilt thou altodifannul my judgement? wilt thou condemn me, that thou may// be righteous ? Haft thou an arm Ike god ? canft thou thunder with a voice lake him ? Thus he expoflulates, thus he re- proves. Fourthly, We have here a large proofor demonflration of the greatnefs, power, wifdom, and foveraignry of God, for the further convi&tion and humiliation of Job. And this proof or demon- flratiou of the power of God is laid downtwo wayes. Firfl,
