And force may fay, feeing thearm is abodily member, how canGcd,who bath nobo- dy, be laid to have an arm ? I answer ; 'cis true, God is a fpirir, without diflin&ion of parts ; yet frequently inScripture, as hu- mane paflions, fobodily parts are afcrtbed to God improperly or by a figure. And becaule the arm is a firong and noble member of mans body, that member by which man puts forth the great- nefs of his lirength, that member by which he doth and atchieves great things ; therefore the arm inScripture (gnifies power, and is the embleme of might and (Irength. In this language the Lord threatned old Eli the High Priefl ( Sam. 2. 31.) Behold the dayscome that 1will cut of thine arm, and the arm of thy fathers houfe, &c. that is, I will take away thy power, and thepower of thy family, Thus fZech. 11. 17. }we to the idol fhepherd, that leaver, the flock, the (werd (hall be upon his arm; that is, his power (hall be broken, and he made ufelefs, as that man is who is wounded. And as the arm notes mintfterial power, fo magifiratical power, whether abufed or rightly ufed (3ob 35.9 .) Now as the arm is put for the power of man, fo for the power of God (Pfal. 98.1. ) 0 fing unto the Lord a new tong, for be bath donemarvellous things ; bis right band and his holy arm bath gotten him the vitlory. Read allo (Ifa. 59.16. and Ifa.6 3.12.) and here in the Text, Hall thou an arm like Ged ? Is thy arm like Gods arm ? that is, is thy power like Gods power ? Hence, Note ; Fir(}, God batha mighty power ? He bath anarm. There are three Scripture expretiions, which in a gradation hold forth the power of God. Firll, The finger of God (Exod. 1ál. 9.) When the Magici- ans could not imitare Mofes in the Plague of Lice, then they faid unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God ; that is, the power of God is eminent in this miracle, it exceeds our power, we not only cannot do the like, but nothing like it, as we did before in femblance of chafe former miracles.
