648 Chap. 40. 4n Expofition upon the Book, of Jo a. Verf.3 t; :lvcce precut (eum ), flavius, non trepidabit, fecurus grit quaasvi 7or- daneserumpar enos ekar, sochar,, provided cool breizes, which blowing there fan the air, and make it very pleafant by actempering the hear. If there be poifon in one creature to annoy, there is an antidote in force other to help. And in this the goodnefs of God (nines molt clearly, that all the inconveniences and annoyances, which come to us by men, yea, which come to us by our fins, are all remedied by Jehis Chrü+, or we have relief by JensChrifl againl them all. When the heat of any affliction molefis us, we may fit down ( as theChurch ftíeaks, Cant.'2. 3.) under his fhadore with great delight, and his fruit will be fweet unto ut. Jefus Chrift is co all believers, not only as the fbadow of atree, but as the fhadowof a great rack, in a weary land (Ifa. 32. 2.) The Lord huh provided us fbady trees, and the willows of the brook ( bleffed and precious pro- miles) to compafs us about in all our troubles. Thus God hash given Behemothhelp again1 immoderate heat; But he is fubje& to muchthrift alfo : for that he huhhelp at hand too, (lore.of water. Verf. 23, 24. Behold be drinkZetb up a river and baffeeb not; be trufieth thatbe can draw up7ordan into hie mouth; betaketb it with hie eyes, hie nofe pierceth through pares. We have had Behemetbjeeding upon the mountains, and re- poling in the (hadows ; here we have him drinking in or at the river. Thefe two verfes, as they Rand in our tranflation, may,ie a fairer fenfe be applied to the Elephant : but before I come to that, I fhall give a brief account of that tranflation givenby the learned Author before named ; according to which, the aid verle is not only bell, but only applicable to the Hippopotami. Behold, let a river prep (orcome upon) him, be will net fear; be is fafe, though Jordan ¡fue forthupon his mouth. Now it's eafily granted, that the tallefi and Rrongel Elephant, would have caufc enough to fear., if a whole river, fuch a great and deep one as Jordan efpecitlly, ihould prefs upon him and over-whelm him , for as the Elephant is no fwimmer, fo he mull have aliberty of breathing, nor can he hold his breath very long; and therefore (as it is faid) ventures to go no further into the water, than he can hold and keep his fnout above water, to draw initire and maintain refpiration. So that in this the Hippopotame hack the advantage of the Elephant, as being able to hold his breath
