Chap. 41. An Expo,1tion on the Book of J e B. Verf.a t 697 given in by himfelf, while he i "s treating of this fea-monfier. There isno [landing before God in our felves ;there is no (landing before (Sod without a Mediator;and there is noMediator burJefusChrifl, who is bothGod and Man,or God-man, for man to [land before God in. Thus much of the firfl ufe or inference, which the Lord makes from ali that he had Paid of Leviathan. The fecond inference followeth in thenext verfe. Verf. a". Who bathpreventedme that I fhould repay him ? As in the former verfe the Lord gave us inftruetion concerning his own all- fufficiency and irrefiflible power, Wbo canfand before me ? So in this, he inilru}s us concerning his own abfolute inde- pendency, Who bath preventedme thatI fhould repay him ? Both which parts of the Application, the Lord !huts up with an M- fertion of his univerfal foveraignty and l &dfhip over all crea- tures, in the dole of this t ithverfe, Whatfoever is under the whole heaven is mine. Wbo hatb prevented one that I fhould repay him? Mafler Broughton renders, whogave me any thing frf, that 1 unnp 1 ,t% may pay him again. Thefe words the Apofllc Taal plainlypui rem t alludes to ( tome conceive be quotes them) in the 35th verfe (Am° the a ithChapter of his Epiflle to the Romans, Who bath known the mind of the Lord ? or who bath been his counfeller ?.or who bath frf given tohim ? and it (hall be recompenfed unto him again. So faith Saint ?aul; andhere the Lord himfelf faith, Who hob pre- ventedme that I fhould repay him ? as much as to fay, Who bath fill given to me ? and it full be recompenfed unto him again. Whobathprevented me ? The Lord feems in there words, to make proclamation all the ku1oflendit world over, to enquireamongAngels and Men,who it is, or whe- s®iht vta ín ther there be any one that can come forth and fay, he bath pre- curds Vatcbi. vented him. To prevent,is to be aforehand with another in courtetie or kind- nets, in helpor affiflance. God prevents man in all thefe, but no man bath prevented God in anyone of them. We may give a three-fold interpretation of this divine challenge. Firfl, Who bath prevented me, or who was afore-hand with one in the workof Çreation ? who helpt me to makeLeviathan ? V vv v 2 you
