Chap, 41. ,1n Expofition upon the Book of J o u. Vert. 12, creatures, How muchmore is he pleafed in declaring the parts and exceNenctes, or thofe me excellent andamiable parts of the new creature! That is, the excellencies ofman in his inner man. Da- vid faith (Pfal. j47, io, r a.) He delighteth not in the flrength of the horfe, hetakethnot pleafure in the legs of a'man, The Lord takethpleafure in them thatfear him, in tholethat hope inhù mer- cy; and with them he is much taken: He is infinitely more pleaf- ed in [peaking of their parts, and powers, and comely proportion, than in thofe of Leviathan, or ofany the mot# comely and beau- tiful creature in the world. Jefus Chris} could not conceal the parts, the power, nor the comely proportion of his Spoufe, that is, of his Church (Cant. 4, i, e, 3, 4.) Behold, thou art fair my love, behold, thou art fair, thou haft doves eyes within thy locks ; thyhair iQ as a flockof goats that appear from mount Gilead ; thy teeth are like a flick of fheep, that areeven [horn, &c. Thy lips are likea thread offcarlet;thy fpeech is comely ; thy temples are like a piece of apomegranate within thy locks ; thy neckislrke the tower of David ; thy breafis are like two young roes, that are twins, which feed among the Lillie!. Thus Jefus Chrifi, you fee, was fo far from concealing, that he gave his divine rhetorick full fcope todepaint all the lineaments, parts, powers, and comely proportion of his Spoule, the Church. Jefus Chrifl was fo ravifht with the beauty which himfelf had put upon the Church, that likean amorous woo- er, he could not (if I may fo [peak) contain himfelf from cry- ing up her comely proportion. The rarefl bodily beauty takes the heart, and affeets the eyeof Chritf, no more than the gafilÿ appearance of a rotting carcafe, unless he fee fpiritual beauty there too ; and where he fees that, he is highly pleafed, though the body, where fuch a foul lodges, bath an appearance as little attra&tive or deferable, as that of a rotting carcafe. Thirdly, Confider the reason why the Lord infias fo much in declaring the parts and powers of Leviathan ; the reasonwas, that God might declare his own power : it was not for Leviathans fake. that God declared his parts, sire, but that he might declare him- fell in Leviathan.
