One is fo, near to another, that noair can came between them. They are joyned one to another, they ¡lick, together, that they cannot be fundred. In thefe three verles Leviathan is defcribed. Firft, By the confidence whichhe hath in his fcales ; they are his pride, being like bucklers of brats. Secondly, Bythe natural clofenefs of his fcales; fo dole theyarc, as if fealed, that no air can corns between them. Thirdly, By the indiffolublenefs of his fcales ; they are joyned fo fat}one to another, that they cannot bs fundred. His fcales arehis pride. The flrong fheildsbave pride, faith Mailer Broughton; that is, his fcales, which are as fo many fheiids for hisdefence, are his pride. Theword is not elfewhere rendred fcales, but firing pieces (Chap. 40. 18.) and here it maybe rendred, flrong pieces of (hetlds, fcales refembling fhields, both in their fafhion and ufe. His fcales arehis pride, that is,he is proud of his fcales.What- foever any man is proud of, may be called his pride. If a man be proud of his riches, thenhis riches are hispride ; if of his parts, thenhis parts are his pride ; if of his firength andbeauty , then firength and beauty are his pride. Leviathans fcales are his pride, that is, he is proud of his fcales. Here again it is obje6ed, as before about teeth, TheWhale bath no fcales, thereforeLeviathan cannot be the Whale. The learned Boehartue infitis much upon this argument againfi the Whale, proving alto by many authorities(which is clear to fight in thofe carkaffes of Crocodileswhich are among us) that the Cro- codile bathgreat and thongfcales, and thofe very clofely laid, or joyned together.
