From this verfe, Obfe rye, Firfl, The fenceof our wants putsus upon prayer. When fob was fenfible that he wanted underfianding and knowledge , he came to God for ir. Give we to underfland, caul not to know. True and fervent prayer floweth from a fence of our wants. If we fee not our felves in need, why fhould we pray ? And when really we (hall have no need (as in heaven) there will be noneed of prayer; all will be praife, and all (hall be ineverlailing praifes. Secondly, The perfon to whom fob maketh his application for teaching, beingGod himfelf, Note; tye knownothing of God, nor of our ¡elves aright, till God teacheth us, till he declareth andmak,,eth it known to us. Every good gift, and every perfc&b gift, is from above, and cometh down from the father of fights, &c. (jam. i. 17.) As noman can either make or redeem himfelf, fono man can each or inflruet himfelf. What we know of God, we know, from God ? 'Tis in his light that we fee light. The light may (hive round about us, and we fee it not ; uniefs God enlighten us, as well as fend us the light, we are never the better. A ï nconver- fion, the Lord firfl opens the eyes, and then turns from darknefs to light (Aets 26, aS.) So under every difpenfarion, we are in the Mmmmm z dark,
