They are at the furtheft remove from abhorring themfelves, who admire them- felves. Secondly, Self- juftifiers, are no true repenters. Chrifi told the Pharifees (Luke r 6. r i.) Te are they which jasfli fieyour felves. They are far from abhorring themfelves, who jufiife themfelves; fuchPurely are highlypleafed with themfelves, and have much confidence in themfelves, therefore very far from feif- abhor rence. Thirdly, What (hall I fay of their repentance, who infield of abhorring themfelves, abhor others ? (Loke 18. 9.) (frill fpakea Parable unto certain which crafted in themfelves that they were righteous, and defpifedothers, and prefently inflanced in the Pharifee, who defpifed the poor Publican, and called him incon- tempt, This Publican ; he would (as we fay) hardly touch him with apair of tongs. They that defpife others, are ufually, if not alwayes, much pleafed with themfelves. Fourthly, If diele feif-boaffers, and Pelf- admirers, &c. are not repenters, then,do they repent who are fo far from abhorring finful Pelf, and righteous Pelf, that they take pleafure in fin and un- righteoufnefs, whether their own or others ? The Apofile fpeaks of fuch (Rom, i. 32.) Whomowingthe judgement of God, that they which commit fucb things, areworthy of death, not only do the fame, but havepleafure in them that do them. That's a dreadful word (2 Thef. 2. is.) That they all might be damned, who be. lieve not the truth, but had pleafure in unrighteoufnefs. O how far arethey from abhorring their own righteoufnefs, who take plea- fure in unrighteoufnefs !- How are they puffed up with that which bath but a (hew of righteoufnefs, who pleafe themfelves with that which is really unrighteous ! Fifthly, If true repentance be accompanied with felf-abhor- rence, then do they repent, who return to chofe fins which they fay theyhave repented of ? do you think the dog baths his vo- mit, when you fee him go back and lick it up again ?
