866 Chap. 42. an Expofition upon the Book of Jos: Verf. 7 in reference to all that Job had fpoken of him, inway of affertion, throughout thewhole difpute, when his foul was heatedand grieved; or of what he fpake towards the latter end, in acooler temper, whets his foul was humbled ? The Jewifh Doors (who for the moli part are very revere againli, and censorious of Job) expound this fentence of God, as if it refpe6led only what Job fpake at the beginning of the 4oth chapter (ver. 3, 4, S,) Then Job anfwered the Lord, and laid, behold, I am vile, what ¡hall 1 anfwer thee ? Once have I fpokers, but Iwill not anfwer; yea, twice, but I will proceed no fur- ;ben. And what he fpake at the 4zd chapter (ver. a, z.) Then Job anfwered the Lord, and Paid, I know that thou can't do every thing , and that no thought can be with-holden from thee, &c. Concluding(ver. 6.) wherefore I abhormy ftlf, and repent in daft and gibes. In rhefe places, fay they, yob fpake righter than his friends, but not fo in the whole body of his difcourfc. Some others poffibly have concurred (though I have feen but one, and him only in Manufcript) with the Rabbint, inthiscenfure ; arm- mg, that Jobs opinionwas the wort/ of all the four, yea, that it was little lets than blafphemy, takingmen off from, at leaft, dif- couraging them in waysof godlinefs, while he affirmed peremp- torily (chap. 9. 22, 23.) He (that is, God ) eleffroyeth the per- feu, and the wicked : if the (courge flay fteddenly, he laugheth at the tryal of the innocent. This afiertion of his concerning God (and of this, his whole difcourfe with his three friends favoured) was not (fay they) fo right as theirs : and therefore they refirain thofe words of God, re have not fpoken of me the thing that is right, ar my fervant Job, to what Job fpake in the chapters men- tioned, when he was upon his repentance ; but will not allow them to reach to, or be meant of what he fpake of God, in the tousle of his former difpute with his friends. But I (hall dole and joyn with thofe, who refer the words of this final judgment which God gave upon this matter, to what Jab fpake ofGod from fir¡/ to laf} ; and that they ate not to be li- mited to what Job fpake after God had humbled him, by (peaking ro himout of the, whirlwind. I grant (as hath been laid ) Yob fpake unduely more than once, in the days of his atiguifh and fore afflition ; for which Elihure- proaed him tharply (chap.. 34, vet. 35, 36, 37. chap. 3 5. 16-) Pmd
