Chap. 42. an Expofition upon the Book of f o B. Verf. ?. 873 brother do but differ from them a little, if he do not fay as they fay, and concur with them fully in opinion, are ready to cenfure him hardly, and give him reproachful language. The Apoftles rule is (Gat. 6. I.) Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye that are fpiritual refiere fucha one in thefpirit of meeknefs, cone fidering thy Jeff, left than alfa be tempted. God who is above all temptation, meekly reftored thefe faulty men ; yea, though his wrath was kindled againa them, yet his fpeech was mild and cool, only laying (and what lefs could he fay,if he Paid any thing) rehave not fpokenof me the thing that is right, As myfervant Job. Why doth the Lori call job his fervant ? Surely at once to put an honour uponhim, and to comfort him. Eliphaz and his two friendswere Gods fervants ; yet becaufeof their mifcarriage in that fervice, God did not own them at that time as fuch. God was wont to call David his fervant at every turn; yet when he had numbred the people, Nathan was Pent to him with a hard mef- cage, and is bid, Go, and fay unto David, not, my fervant David (z:SQm. 24. 22.) Hence note, Ninthly ; God honoursman much, by owning him as his !crying. To ferve the Lord, is as much our priviledge as our duty ; and when the Lord callethus to his fervice,he rather puts áfavour up- us, thana burden. The Lord is the highefl matter, and they are highly honouredwho arehis fervants. It is an honour to ferve Kings and Princes : what is it then to ferve the King of Kingr, the Prince of the Kings of the earth! as JeCus Chri(l is called (Rev. 1. 5.) ' Tis alto profitable as well as honourable, ro ferve the Lord ; for he is the bell matter , his work is the bell work, and his wages is the bell wages. And not only fo, but'ris eafie ro be the Lords fervant ; for ashe expedis we t coulddo his work, fo wemay expe& help and ftrength, heartsand hands from hire-to-do ir. If the Lord doth but own us for his fervants, we (hall not faint at his work, whether it be doing or fuffering work. God upheld his fervant yob'in, and carryed him through all chafe try- als and troubles, which would have funk him a thoufand times, had not he flood by-him anda(lïfted him.
