874 Chap, 42. , 4 . Expofstion upon the Book, of J o B. Verf. in Covenant with his fervants, and that a Covenant of grace, in whichevery command bath a promifeannexed to it ; and that not only a promife of reward,.whcn we have done ir, but of flrength ILO do it : and if fo, thenwe mayconclude it eafie as well as ho- honourable and profitable, to ferve the Lord. Therefore Let us labour to approve our felves the Lords fervants. And if any ask, who isthe Lords fervant ? I anfwer, Fi ft, He is theLords fervant that doth the Lords work ; His fervants we ars, whom we obey ;, he is our mailer whofe work we do. It is good for us to confider whofc work we are about. Jefus Chrift was the fathers fervant in that great undertaking, the re- demption of loft man. Now, all his work on earth was his fa- thers work (John 9.4.) f (faid he)mu.ft work the work, ofhim that fens me. UInlefs we are in the Lords work, and doing the Lords will, we cannot be reckoned among his fervants. Secondly, If you are the Lords fervants,, then as youdo the Lords work, fo you are ready to do all his work. He is not a fer- vant that doth what he plcateth. Some fay, they will do the Lords work, but they pick and chufe, they do this, and leave theother undone :He is the Lords fervant, that goeth throughall the Lords work. If we do eafie work, and refufe hard work; if we refufe that wo:k.which difpleafeth the world, and chufe only that which is pleating to the world", we ferve not the Lord, but the world and our felves. Here is the cryal, when we dowhat God willed], whether the world will it, and like ir, yea, or no. The Lord faid of David, He is myfervant (and what will he do ?) he will do all my will that is, hewill not flick at any of my work. Thirdly, If ye are the Lords fervants,,. as ye will do all his work, fo no work but his ; youwill not.do the work of the flefh, you will riot doany work for man,. in oppofition to the work. of God. In fubordination to the will of God, we fli©uld readily do the work of man. In ferving men thus, we arc alfo the fervants of God. But he that is the Lords fervant, will not do anv work for man which contradieteth or c,ofleih the fervice of God. Chrifl faith exprefly, No man ferveth two M41ers ; ye eannet. ferve God and,Mammon(Mat. 6 24.) We may ferve many Ma- ilers, if theycommand the fame thing, or things fubardinate ; but . wecannot ferve two Mailers if their commands interfere and. I]afh.one with the other,}s the workof God ,and Mamraiondoth.
