Chap. 42. Eon Expofition upon the Book of J o B. Verf.9. 917 a man underauthority, and 1 have fonldiers under me; and I fa, to . one, go, and be goeth ; and to another, come, and he corneth; and to a tbird,do this,& hedoth it:Such an obedience arewe to yeild to the commands of God. The Apofile giveth a like charge concerning fervants, with refpcél toall their mailers lawful commands (Tit. 2, 9.) Exhort fervantsto be obedient unto their ownmailers, and to pleafe them well in all things, not anfwering again, that is, not gainfaring, or not contradiaing, as the word may be tranflated. When a fervant received] a juil command from his mailer, he mull not contradi6l, he muilnot put in his advice, thus or thus, but follow the ordersgiven him. Now, if Mailers on earth ought to receive, in alllawful commands, fuch obedience from their fer- vants, howmuchmore is this due to our Lord and Mailer in hea- ven ? efpecially,if we confider what thecommands of the Lord are, under thefe three titles or attributes ofthem. Firil, They are all juil and good. It is impoflible for God to command that which is not right to be done, for his command tnaketh that right which is done, whatfoever it is ; his will is righteoufnefs it felf, and the rule of ir. Secondly, His commands are not only juil and good in them- felves, but they are good to us, they are given for our profit and benefit, it is our inrereul as well asour duty to obey them. Fn keeping them there is great reward (Pfal. 19. ra.) yea, the keep - ing of them is a great reward. Do not my words(faith theLord, 1YIic, a. 7.) do good to,bim that walketh uprightly æ Thirdly, Thecommands of the Lord are eafie:That's die Apo- files meaning, whenhe faith ( a John S. 3,) His conmandements are not grievose. The Lorddotbnot put grievous things, nor heavy burdens upon hispeople. My yoke (faith Chriil, Mat. r r. 3o.) is eafie, andmy burden lígbt. Eafìe and light to a fpiritual mind; to the new creature, though grievous to corruption, and bur- denfome to the flefh. Hard things are eafie, and heavy things light to a futable mind ; whereas eafie things arehard, and light things heavy to a mind that is not fo. Seing then the commands of the Lord are juil in themfelves, good to us, and not grievous, he being our Soveraign, we ought fpeedily to obey whatfoever he commands ; and leaving off, or laying afide all difputes and ex- cufes, prefendy fall upon the work which he at any time calleth as
