Chap4z. an Expofition open the Book of Jos. Verf. t o. 945 Fifthly, Prayer isnot only the voice of the new creature, but it is the voice of the Spirit with the new creature, The Spirit himfelf maketh intereefon for tee (Rom.8. 26.) 'fis the holy Spirits work to form rcquefts in our hearts to God. As the.Spi- 4 it felf witneffeth with our fpirits, that we are the children of God (Rom. 8. t 6.) fo heprayeth in the fpirits of Gods children, Theprayer of abeliever hath the power of the holy Spirit in it, and therefore it muff needs make great turns. God turnççl the captivityof fob whenhe prayed. Sixthly,Jefus Chrift prefentsfuch prayers, the prayers of faith, theprayers of repentance, unto Godhis Father. Chrifis interceftl lion gives effet,or gets anfwer to our fupplications. The Father hears the Son always(johns 1.4a.)and fo he doth all them, whole prayers a e offered to him by the Son (Revel. 8. 3.) The angel came and' flood at the altar, having a golden cenfer, and there was givenunto him much incenfe, that he fhoulel offer it with the pray- ers of all Saints, upon the golden altarwhich was before the throne. The angel there fpoken of, is the angel or meffenger of theCoast- pant, prophefied of (Mal. 3. a .).that is, Jefus Ghriíl, 'tis he, he alone, who offers the incenfe of his own prayers,' with the prayersof all Saints, upon the golden altar, which is before the throne ; and being there reprefented doing fo, prefently (as it followeth, ver. 5.) There were voices, and thunders, and lighten» ings, fignifying the wonderful egfeets of prayer, till it fhould come (after many turnings in the world, or, as I may lay, after a world of turnings) to the Lords turning of Sions captivity, as here of pbs. Seventhly, Jefus Chrifi; doth not only prefent the prayers of believers to God, but alto prayeth in them ; when faints pray he prayeth in them, for he and they are myflically one : And as Chrift is in believers the hope of glory(Col. t.27.)fohe is in them the helpof duty; and fomuch their help, that without him they can do nothing (John r g. 5.) . Nowa believersprayer being, in this fenfe, Chrifis prayer, it cannot but do great things. Laffly, As Jefus Chrifl prefents the prayers of believers to the Father, and prayeth in them, or helps them to pray, by the bleffedand holySpirit Pent down, according to his gracious pro- mire, into their hearts ; fo he himfelf prayeth for them, when theyare not actuallypriying for themfelves.
