So much for the opening of the fir claufe. We may note hence, firft, That No wifdcm or craftinefs of man, can )(landbefore thewifdome and pow- 'cr ofGod. He not only takes them in their foolifhncís, but in their craftinefs ; He ilayes not, till they begin todote, and do weakly, before he takes them; but when they are in their height of wir, and in the depths of worldly wifdom and policy, when they put forth the quint(ffence of craft, and give counfel like the Oracle ofGod ( 2 Sam, 16. 23.) then God takes them. Ile takes them in their craftinefs.( Pro. sr. 3o. ) There as no wifdom, suer underfandirg, nor counfel againff the Lord. No counfel againft the Lord: How is it then Paid in the fecoad Pfalm, 7be Kings of the earth ¡et tbemfelves, and the Rulers take counfel together, atom f# the Lord,and againff his anointed ? There are many counfels oppofed againft the Lord, but thereare none prevailing againfl the Lord. The meaning of that holy Proverb, is, That no wifdomc, not the molt fublime and refined wifdom ; no coun- fel , not the wofl Machivilian or Achitophelian counfel, can prevail
