400 Chap. g. AnExpofition upon the Book J V B. Vert. Hear thou it. To advife thee, was our part; to hear and hear ken is thy part ; therefore hear it But had he not heard themall this while, why doth Eliphaz now bid him hear it It is true, he had heard ; but there is more required, than the hearing of the care, when fuch a Sermon as this is preached. To heare, is more than the work of the ear. It is, Firfi,to believe and give credit to what was heard.(jam9.27.) I told you before, andyou would not hear ( faith the blind man) wheyfore would you hear it again ? that is, I have told you al- ready, but. you would not believe, nor give credit to what I fpake: Secondly töhear is to hearken, that is, to yield and content to what is fpoken. (Gen. 3.17 . Forafmuch as thou haft h. earkned to the counfel of thy wife : Barely to hear a temptation io iin,is no ad of fin : as barely to hear an exhortation to good, is no ad of grace. therefore becaufe thou haft hearkned, is, becaufe thou haft yielded and'eonfented to that which the hath fpoken, Thirdly, To hear, is to obey, Ifa. 55. 3. Hearandyourfoulfhall live. It is notevery hearing of the ear, that bringeth life to the foul, obedient hearing is enlivening hearing: So here, We havefearched it,fo it is, hear it, that is,believe what wehave fpoken, fubmit unto, and confent to what we have fpo- ken, obey and praditè what we have fpoken. To hear, is both an ad of fence and an ad of reafon, anad of nature, and an ad ofgrace. Tohear one requetiing and praying is to grant : and to hear one counfelling and commanding,is to obey. WhenGrad hears man,he grants and when man hears God, or hears men fpeaking in the name of God, he yields and obeyes. It followes, And knom thou itfor thy good. The Hebrew is, v know it for thy fell'. Now becaufe that which a man knows for himfelf,is for his profit, therefore we tranflateknow itfor thy good; that is, know it as that, whereby thy felt maycft receive good. The meaningof, know itfor thyfelf, is not this, know and keep it to thy felf, let nonepartake with thee of it ; It is againti, the ufe of knowledge, that a man fhould foknow for himfelf, though a mans felfhath or may have good by all he knowes. So we muff underhand that ofSalomon, Prov.9. 12. If thou be wife, thouJhalt be wife f r thy Pelf ; that is, thou (halt be advantag'd by thy wit dome; Wildome brings in a fair revenew ; thoughmanyknow much
