Chap. 5. 4nExpefstienurn the Book of J OB. Ver(. 27. much, and feem verywife, who know nothing for themfelves, and are not wife at all, for their own good. There are three forts ofknowing men, Firft, Some knowonely toknow. They know, but they propofe no end to themfelves, beyond knowledge: They know not for the good ofothers,no nor for their own good.As it is with riches and honourfo withknowledge:covetous men gather riches that they maybe rich, they purpofe not any other end ofhaving riches, but only to be rich. An ambitious man, defires honour, that he may be honourable, hepropofeth to himfelfnoother end of his deriving honour, but tobe honourable. So many are covetous and ambitious ofknowledge, they read from book to book, and from point to point, from fcience to fcience, and what do they with all thisknow- ledge?only this, that they may know;to know thus,is not toknow forgood, To know only to know, is no better thennot to know. Secondly, Others know, that they may be knowne, to know this is theirend, that othermen mayknow that they areknowing men, that they aregreat Schollars, great read men, men of great abilities and boundlefs fludies. Even as fore defire riches, that theymaybe accounted rich, and honour, that they may be fam'd for honourable. To know only that we may be known, is wortthen not to know. But thirdly. That which is the right wayofknowing,is to know that others may know,or, toknow that our felves may pra6ife. Thefe are the trueends ofknowing, tocommunicate knowledg to obey knowledge. Thegreat endof knowing thouldbeour own profiting in holincfs and obedience. And fo here, Know itfor thy good, is, to know it fo,as to make an advantageofthy knowledg. To knowfor our good,is theonly goodknowledg. Hence obferve, firlt, Truth deferves our moft diligent fearch. We havefearched it ( faithEliphaz) The promife of finding truth is only to fuchas fearch for truth (Prov. a. 4. ) Thou Jhalt findwifdome, &ç. If thoufeekeft ber as filver, and fearcheft for her asfor bid treafures. There are two places, two veines efpe cially, where truth is to befound ; There is theBookofGods word, and the book ofGodsworks : The bookofScripture, and the bookof providence ; In there twobooks,we are to fearch,in them to lludy out truth, for our ownpradife, and for advife to others.
