Chap 7. An Expslitien up^n the Bock of O B.. Vert. z. 5 3 the righteous judge between Mailers and fervants, gives this ac- count or groundot his Law, Thou fialt not detain -e hia wages, for be fettetis his heart upors it Poor man, he bath been working all day, and he hathhad his heart upon his wages ; the hopes of that gave him fome relief and cafe in going through his hard task and tcrvice, therefore thou fhalt not keep it from him, his heart is fet upon it. But it may b.. quettioned ; Is not this a 6nin the fervant to fet his heart upon his wages ? A charge is given, Pfal. 6z. i o. If riches tncreafe, fet net your heart upon them ; and is it ape- proveable in a fervant, to let his heart upon his wages or en- creafe ? There is a great difference ( and it is worthyout notice ) be tween thofe two Scriptures, The word in Deutrouomy(fpeaking ofthe poor fervant ) notes the lifting up of the foul ; He bath lifted up birfoul unto it, to we read in the margin of our Bibles But in the Pfalme ( where he (peaksof the covetous rich man -) the word imports, the letting down,or<fetlingof his heart upon it. A poor man bath but a little, and his wages(it may be) is above him, his wages ( pollìbly ) is more`than he is-worth, therefore he lifteth up his mind to it, as a mercy and a bleffing from God, for the reliefof himfelf and family ; take heed ( faith the Lord ) that thou detain not his wages ; for the poor man lifteth up his foul to it, as a thinghe reacheth upward for , It is very dangerous so take that out of the bands ofman, iwhich be is taking ( ar-ït were ) rut of the hand ofGod. But a rich man, who hath abundance, lets his heart down,he croucheth and broodeth upon the creature:, A godly poor man, looks up tohis reward, and fetcheshis bread from Heaven ; Acovetous rich man looks down to his reward, and takes his bread from the earth A godly man is above all earthly things, and yet he lifts up his mind to receive them. A meer natural man is below earthly things, and yet he defcetads that he may receive them : The things which both receive, are the fame, but the conveyance and derivation, differ alwayes,.as much as Heaven and earth, fometimes, asmuchas Heaven and hell. But to the teat, Latily+-obferve, That, it is the propertyof hireling( take it firit` ly ) to eye his reward. This is the defcriptionofan hireling, be is one who looks to bis reward, wbatfoever be dab to bis work. Chrifl, yobti 10. 13. contrmesthis charaf er, The hireling Teeth, bacaetfe be
