644 Chap. 7. An Expofition upon the Bool¿,of J O B. Verf.16 ven, is the longef , fo it is thefhorteft ; Eternity is toogefl in regardof duration, but it isfhorteft in regard of apprehenfion ; The eternity of heaven thall be to us, no more tedious than a minute or a mo- ment: Eternity is fo full of pleafure and fatisfa&ion, that it breeds no fulnefs of it felf : living at the well head of comfort, in imme- diate communion with God by Jefus thrift, our comforts renew as much as they continue ; whence frefhnefs of appetite, and ful- nefs of fatiffaF.tion, are perpetually interchangeable. Thejoyes of that eftateare fo many, that the yeares teem but few. Eternal joy makes eternity, but as a moment, as eternal pain will make every moment an eternity. Thirdly, Obferve; forafrmuch as job faith, lwouldnot live al- wayes ; he intimates that there is fuch a defire in forne men ; for he (peaksof a life in this world ; There is aprinciple in man, drawing out bis heart in defire.r, to live alway in the world. I (faith lob) would not live alway ; let others make that their choice, if they will, I will not. Molt arc very greedy ofthat commodity, and would not part with it upon any terms ; and no wonder, for (as the Plalrniii describes them) They have theirportion in this life , He that hath his portion in this life, would ever have this life ; he that hath nothing beyond this world, would never go beyond the world. Such mutt needs be allforlife, all for the world, becaufe thefe are their all. You (hall never come to a worldly man, and find him in a mind to die ; Let others take Heaven, he is contented with his Earth; let others make their bell of the next life, the prefent shall ferve his turn. From the reafon of this request, My dayei are vanity, Ob- ferve ; The life of man is a vain life. Vanity hath two things in it, whereofthe one may f em quite contrary to the other ; it hath emptinefs in it, and it bath tulnefs in it , it hath emptinefs of comfort, and fulnefsof vexation; that's the right /vanity, Vanity with vexation offpirit ; My dayes are vanity, they are empty of good and full ofevil. Four waycs, the vanity of mans dayes may be demonftra-, ed. Firff, theyare vain comparatively s Soour dayes are more then vain, or kfs then vanity , for they are nothing, d'falm fig. 5.
