But thirdly ( which is chicfely intended in this place ) to mag nifie, is, to make great, or to give fonie real addition ofworth and refpe&. Thus the Lord magnifies man ; he magnifies him, by ad- ding fomewhat to him, by giving glory and luttre to man, who in himfelf is vile and mean, and contemptible. And thus God magni- fies man foute ways. Firti, He magnifies man in the work of creation ; of that we reade, Pral. 8.4. where this queflion is put, what is man that thou fhouldatf befo mindful of him, or thefon of man that thou vifiteff him ; The third verfe (hews us, what it was which railed the Pfaln ifl to this admiration of the goodnefs of God to man ? When I behold the heavens, the workof thy fingers, the Moone and the ftars which thou haft made ; Lord what is man ? God in the work of creation, made all there things ferviceableand in- ftrumental for the good cf ma;. What is man, that he (hould have a Sun, a Moon and Stars planted in the firmament for him ? what creature is this? when great preparations, are made in any place, mach provifons layd in, and the hod.; adorned with ri- ches furnitures ; We fay, what is Ibis man that comes to fuch a houfe ? when fuch à goodly fabriek was railed up, the goodly houfe of the world adorned and furnifhed, we have reafon, admi- ring tofay ; what is this man that muti be the tenant, or inhabi- tant of this houle? There is yet a higher exaltation ofman in the creation, man was magnified with the (lamp of Gods image ;' one part whereof the f'falmifi defcribes at the fift verfe Thou haft given him to have dominion over the works of thy hands ; Thou haft put all things under bis fat, all Peep and oxen, yea, andthe beafts of thefield, the fowl of the are, and the ftfh of the fu, &c.
