Chap. 7. An expofrtion upon the Bookof J OB. VerG 21. 7°7 blifhed ? Sin troubles our peace, thepeace of the foul, and the peace ofKingdomes, Sin is the great make-bate, and pardon is the return ing of our peace, and quieteth all again, and there- foreno marvel, if we cry out, Why doeff thou not pardon our fins? He that is greatly indebt, and feares every hour to bearreffed and call in prifon, is trying all friends to get fecurity, and prote- dion. Sinning is a running indebt with God, and it brings us under the danger ofhis arreft every moment: Forgivenef`s cancels the bond, when the fin is pardoned, the debt is paid, and the foul difcharged; and therefore no wonder if in this cafe, we hear, or make firong cryes, Why doeff thou not pardon our fins, Illy Son (faith Solomon, Prov. 6. 4. fpeaking about furetifhip) if thou be furetyfor thy friend (if thou haft ingaged thy felffor another) Give not fleep to thine eyes, nor Humber to thine eye - lids, deli- ver thy felf as a Roe from the band oftbe hunter , and as a bird from thehand ofthe fowler. Not to give refi to,theeye, nor Hum- ber to the eye-lids, notes the hotteft purfuit and gxeateft intention offpirit about bufìnefs; Thus bulle Solomon advifes a man to be, who becommeth furety for another. Then what fhould we do, who have contracted huge debts our felves ? How fhould we in this fenfe, give our eyes no reft, and our eye-lids no flurnber, till our fouls be delivered, as a Roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler ; that is, from all thepower and challenge, which the Law without us,Confcieneewithin us, Satan purfuing us, and the juftice ofGod threatning us, can any way make or have againft the peace ofour fouls. That's the firft thing from themanner or form in which Job fues for the pardon of fin. His fpirit doth;bt fall, he growes not flat upon this point, but is as high and carnal here, for the pardon offin as in any of hisrequefis for the cafeof his painedbod y, or the dilfolution ofit. Why doeff thou not pardon my .fin,j and take away mine iniqui- ty?
