11 1 116 Chap. 8. An Expofition upon the Bookof 19B., Verf. zg: n' ti ql ven fometirnes, and then likeone in heaven,he cannot but rejoyce.. He may have a glimps ofheaven uponeartb, all whofe heaven is earth. 7hiois his joy. Secondly, This, may be demonftrative, and anfwers the quelli- on; what is his joy ? It is this, His worldly comforts, his flourifh- ing outward condition is his chiefeft joy. Then note, The joy .of hypocrites is chiefly bottomed upon outwardthings. It is not the joy of the Lord, no, nor joy in the Lord: Rejoycein the Lord, anda- gain, I fay rejoyce, is the Gofpell- command. An hypocrite, cannot rejoyce thus. When he rejoyces in the Lord, fomewhat betides the Lord caufeth his joy. He rejoyces in his green boughs, in his goodly branches, in his fuppofed thong root; but to rejoyce in Godas God he knows not how. David: joy was theoppofite ofthis (Pfa14.6)Lord lift thou up the light of thy countenance up- on me, and that trill put gladnefs in myheart, more thenin the time that their corn andwine encreafed.Let me have the Sun-thineofthy love, and then though I have nothing but darknefs and clouds. from the .world, l (hall rejoyce. But what faith the hypocrite ? let my corn and wine encreafe, let the Surf of outward profperity thine warm upon me, let me have my greennefs ofcreature-con- tentments, let me have credit and fair repute amongmen, there will put gladnefs in my heart; Thefe glad his heart, when he hath . riot a dramofgraceor goodnefs there. Thirdly -, The joy of anhypocrite is butfor a moment,It is a perifh ing joy. This is thejoy of his way; you fee what it amounts to,how well it Wis. His greennefs is turned intowithering, his root rots, and his fruit falls off. This is his joy. He is like thofe fpokenof in the Epiftle of Jude (verf. r4. )trees twice dead, andpluckedup by the roots. That's theconclufion of the hypocrite : he hath a name to live, but he is dead, twicedead, naturally dead in fin, and judici- ally dead under wrath: he was born fpiritually dead, and his, whole life is a paffage to eternall death. He bath rejoyced a while, but he muff mourn for ever.Theportion ofhypocrites is weeping and gnafhing ofteeth ( Mat.24.5 r .) Their joy is but for a morningor a day, weeping comesat night,&that night hath nomórningafter it.. Andout of the earth (hall others grow. Some read, Out of the earth fhall fomewhat elfe, force other thing. grow : We, out of the earth ( when thefe are removed) other perlons (ball grow, who (hall inherit the place, and poffefs the dwelling
