Figuratively, So it is put for the underftanding, becaufe as t'gitur,qua,qu.a the eye is the light ofthe body; fo the underftanding is the light Cognovimus of the mind. Here are three faculties , and three as : i The heart to perceive 2, The eye to fee, 3. The ear to hear. The heart is fometimes put for the whole inward man , and then the eye and the ear are taken properly for the organs of the out- ward man : but we cannot interpret Mores fo , for though the Lord hadnot given them an heart-to perceive, yet they had bo- dilyeyes to fee , and ears to hear , they were neither deafnor blind fenfitively : fo then, the two latter exprefiìons import no more then the firft ; hebath not given you eyes to fee, he bath notgiven you ears tohear , that is , you are utterly shut up in biindnefs and ignorance, or youhave not hearts to.perceive (Lak;24.3 t.)
